Becoming a Catholic

We are glad that you are interested in the Catholic faith and we encourage you to read on and to contact us if we may help you. There is no commitment expected of you when you seek to find out more about Catholicism. Those persons coming from another Christian tradition or who were never baptized are welcome into an ‘inquiry’ time where, at their own pace, they may address questions in gentle, informal conversations with adult parishioners.  These parishioners are members of a trained team of Catechists and Sponsors who walk with the new candidate during this time and throughout the process once the candidate decides to commit to the full initiation process.

How to Get Started

Beth Casey, our Pastoral Associate for Faith Formation, will be happy to answer your questions and may be reached via telephone at (518-274-6269) or e-mail  bcaseyolv@nycap.rr.com.

What is involved in being initiated into the Catholic Church?

The process invites you to join with others like yourself and Catholic people who will share with you what “being Catholic” is about: what we believe (Church teaching); how we live our lives (putting belief into practice); and how we pray (worshipping God).  This process is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (sometimes shortened to RCIA).

In the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults you will embark upon a journey of faith, fellowship, and prayer designed for adults who would like to learn (or even re-learn) the basic tenets of Catholicism in an atmosphere that is warm, supportive, and friendly.

If you have not been baptized, the Christian initiation process prepares you to become a Catholic Christian through the celebration of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist (Holy Communion) at the Easter Vigil.

If you have been baptized in another Christian tradition, the initiation process prepares you to enter into the full communion of the Catholic Church by celebrating the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist (Holy Communion). This celebration will typically take place in the Spring along with the youth being confirmed.
